Small hills like this one will greet you as your ship
comes off the Caribbean Sea and into St. Thomas Harbor.
As you head further into St. Thomas Harbor you will see
homes dotting the hills.
The view as your ship begins its approach to the West Indian Company
Dock where cruise ships tie-off in St. Thomas.

port of call.
A welcome sign and taxis await as you near the St. Thomas cruise ship
dock.

the West Indian Company Dock as the cruise ship pulls into port.
A map of the St. Thomas cruise ship dock area. Note that there is
taxi service available right on the pier. A shopping mall (the Havensight Mall) is also
located within a short walking distance of the cruise ships.
Also within walking distance is the tramway station. An aerial tram (suspended
cable car) takes visitors to a lookout point above St. Thomas Harbor.
Note that tourist information booth is located between the dock
and the Havensight Mall. A small pharmacy (with many
necessity items) can be found in the Havensight Mall.
This photo was taken while walking off the cruise ship at the St.
Thomas port. The picture shows two passengers getting their photo
taken by a cruise ship photographer. The pictures are later sold
aboard.
The atmosphere on the dock is somewhat chaotic. Beside
photographers, there are tour operators trying to assemble their groups
and taxi drivers selling rides.
Note the many people waiting just outside the ship. People are
holding tour signs and taxi sighs. The woman with the clipboard
is the dock taxi coordinator. Taxis leave from the dock to go all
over the island. Routes to downtown, Magens Bay and Sapphire Bay
Beach are all different. Tell the taxi coordinator where you want
to go and she will assign you to the right vehicle.
Many St. Thomas Taxis are "open air." This taxi features
passenger seating in the bed of a pickup truck. Large passenger
vans and small shuttle buses are also used as taxis on St. Thomas.
TIP: Unlike other Caribbean cruise ship ports of call,
there is no
need to haggle price with St. Thomas taxi drivers. All fares are
set by the government. All taxis charge the same fixed rates.
NEXT: Take a wild ride on a St. Thomas taxi and see what
the island really looks like. Also check out the beautiful
beaches, shopping and tramway. Click here to continue our St.
Thomas virtual tour.
